‘War of the Worlds‘ wins the Rudolph Dirks Award!

Very very happy today: I received the Rudolph Dirks Award for 'Best Literary Adaption' for my ‘War of the Worlds' graphic novel!

The Rudolph Dirks Award is named after famous comic artist Rudolph Dirks (‘The Katzenjammer Kids‘) from the Golden Age of newspaper comics that I totally adore and that indeed were an orientation for the visual concept of ‘War of the Worlds‘. So I‘m more than honored to be awarded this prize that is the german equivalent of the Eisner Award, itself being awarded annually at the San Diego Comic Con.

‘War of the Worlds‘ at the German Comic Con Berlin on September 30 and October 1 / Book Signing Schedule!

On September 30 and October 1st, the German Comic Con in Berlin will be held at the Messe Berlin at the Berlin fair, Messedamm 22, 14055 Berlin (halls 1.2 and 3.2.). For this year‘s fair, I was asked to do the ‘official artwork’ for the con. Since my ‘War of the Worlds‘ graphic novel came out this year by Egmont, it was my first choice to do something related to that.
I was happy to use the opportunity to illustrate a scene that could have happened throughout the novel, in fact, H.G. Wells himself gives it a thought in his book: The martians going on a rampage in victorian (or, in this case, wilheminian) Berlin. The author lets his main character (in my graphic novel adaption: Robert) think about what might happen to other capitals in the world at a point of the story where ‘all seems lost‘.
A thrilling idea for the illustrator :). So I prepped this martian war machine up for a marauding tour through one of Berlins most exclusive ‘shopping districts‘ of the late 19th century: Leipziger Straße. Here big and beautiful department stores had been built, the most famous one the Wertheim store (the ‘Mall of Berlin‘ is standing on its spot today). The building‘s design set new standards for warehouse architecture, with its long vertical columns and festive ornamental style by architect Alfred Messel. On the final illustration seen above, the martian war machine seems to have just destroyed the main part of the building.
In the background on the left, there was also place for a still-standing Brandenburg Gate.
I will sign the ‘War of the Worlds‘ graphic novel on the con at the Egmont booth (hall 3.2, A7). Here‘s the schedule:

Saturday, September 30:

12 am - 2 pm

from quarter to 3 pm to half past 3 pm there‘s a panel with me about my work and supposedly some live drawing

4 pm - 5 pm

Sunday, October 1:

12 am - 2 pm

3 pm - half past 4 pm

See you there! :)

I would be glad to see you there! Bring your ’War of the Worlds’ copy or whatever you like to the Modern Graphics booth, where I will wait and draw stuff like martians, tripods and beautiful dames in period costumes for you.

Radio Interview Live Recording

Earlier this year I was a guest on the radio show ’Souterrain’ hosted by Guido Fahrendholz on Radio Alex berlin. We had a 45-minute talk about my graphic novel adaption of ’The War of the Worlds’ by H.G. Wells (Egmont Graphic Novel), life, growing up in North Rhine-Westphalia and the importance of studying original english window locks. We had a lot of fun! If you’re interested how I sound on a live radio show, and want to listen to german folks at all, you can do that by clicking the link below. Unfortunately it’s without the nice music we had for intermissions, but that’s because of GEMA and copy rights, of course. But I think it’s still enjoyable! Have fun!

Two Dedications

Two new book signings of my ’War of the Worlds’ graphic novel (Egmont). Both depicting Emma, one of my main characters, doing things you might wanna do after you won your life back (and Martians are defeated): The upper one (for a friend living in Rome) showing her visiting the Arch of Constantine, the one below finding her searching for children’s books in what is supposed to be the book department of a big store of the time ’War of the Worlds’ is set (maybe Harrod’s? Or somewhere in Europe, maybe Belgium). Is she planning a little family with Robert, my other main character of the graphic novel?

I love to imagine what my characters do further, especially after finishing a graphic novel.

’The War of the Worlds’ on TV (Link)

The graphic novel adaption of H.G. Wells’ ’The War of the Worlds’ (Egmont Graphic Novel) was featured on TV in the show ’Kulturzeit’ on 3Sat yesterday! They made a really nice movie/book trailer for that which is already up on their page: Link
I really enjoyed it, it’s a funny felling to see your panels animated and the story you dived in so deeply presented in a TV show, also kind of weird :-). But very happily weird, indeed!

’War of the Worlds’ Graphic Novel on German TV

Hi there! Tomorrow, at 7:20 pm, my ’War of the Worlds’ graphic novel adaption will be featured on german TV in the show "Kulturzeit" on 3Sat. I am looking forward to that, feel free to snuggle on your couch and watch this really interesting program packed with many other art-and-literature-related topics, too!

Literatur SPIEGEL Video

Here’s to a very nice video about the making of ’War of the Worlds’ by the german Literatur SPIEGEL. Thanks to Thomas Grabka and Evelin Timm for filming and editing! :-)

’The War of the Worlds’ Graphic Novel: Flip-Through Movie

A small flip-through movie of my ’War of the Worlds’ graphic novel (not the complette book, though, and in no Academy Award-winning quality, I’m afraid - but I hope you can enjoy and nevertehless get some insight in the comic :)

The War of the Worlds’ Graphic Novel Radio Update!

I’m on the radio again with my ’War of the Worlds’ graphic novel - in three different shows! The schedule is above, I hope you are likely to join in, if you don’t fear to listen to me on the speakers.

’The War of the Worlds’ Graphic Novel is Out Now!

The graphic novel adaption of H.G. Wells' famous ’War of the Worlds’ is officially out now!

I am soooo superhappy :-). And I hope you like it - as well as I do, I did my very best - the book is so truthful to the Wellsian novel, I can guarantee that - so, if you read it, you really should have the impression what the book is like (though my adaption it is an own piece of work as well, of course :-).

You can purchase the book everywhere in stores and of course on the evening of the book premiere (on January 20 at 8 pm, at the Bibliothek am Luisenbad (a library), 13357, Travemünder Straße 2, Berlin - the entrance is free), too, and I will gladly sign it for you.

More information and pictures are following soon.

Radio Interview about ’The War of the Worlds’ Graphic Novel

Next Sunday, January 8, at 6.40 pm there will be an interview with me on radioeins about my graphic novel adaption of "The War of the Worlds" by H.G. Wells. I am looking forward to it and to many listeners!

It’s exciting to talk about this comic in a medium where (concerning me and my intention to adapt ’War of the Worlds’) everything began :-).

’War of the Worlds’ Graphic Novel Exhibition

Hanging the ’War of the Worlds’ exhibition at the Bibliothek am Luisenbad, a library in the Berlin borough Wedding. The exhibition is from January 2nd to February 24th, you can see original preliminary drawings of the graphic novel pages as well as some conceptional art and finished artwork. The exhibition accompanies the book premiere on January 20, 8 pm, at the same library in the so-called ’Puttensaal’, a beautiful belle epoque room where I will show my workflow on ’War of the Worlds’ throughout the years and how I came to do this famous classic as a comic book. Everyone is welcome to attend! I’m accompanied at the piano by Jörg Walter and entrance is free.
